Dear Friends, I am a newcomer. Fascinated over the interest shown on Rumi.Never expected to see a discussion on Rumi in Indian based website. I am very keen to learn about mystical poems. The poems selected above are really beautiful. Just would like to share some thoughts here beyond the aesthetic part. Belonging to the Sufi tradition, Rumi'spoems always laden with multiple meanings. This often confuse those who not familiar with the eastern philosophy. I think for the Indian are really familiar with it. Just to share a classic case,Edward FitxGerald the great orientalist who popularise the rubaiyat, a kind of poem, misunderstood completely the rubaiyat of Umar Khayyam, another great sufi poet.He interprete directly the words like wine, sex, love, intoxication and pictured Khayyam as a pure hedonist. In fact following his translation, there was a few bohemian kind of clubs established in Amreica. It was quoted that the groups hold to the philosophy of "let us eat and drink for tommorow we die". But it should also be noted that he FitzGerald later admits in his second edition that he was wrong to take Khayyam literally and potrays him as a materialist. Actually it was pointed out by another orientalist, J.B Nicholas, a fenchman. Fitzgerald, words read as follows, "I do not consider Omar to be the material epicurian that i have literally taken him for, but a mystic, shodowing the deity under the figure of wine...". Anyway, his English translation is considered by many the best -there is also opinion that it superceded the original! What is very interesting for me is, reception among Hindu mystics over Khayyam's rubaiyat is great. One of the important studies on Khayyam is done by an Indian, Swami Govinda Tirtha. In fact his date of Khayyam birth is accepted by most scholars as most accurate. The Swami actually drew the the horoscope of him! and later was verified as correct by scientist from Institute of Theoretical Astronomy, USSR. Another good work, I think the most recent is the posthumous publication of Paramahansa Yogananda (Self Realization Fellowship),"Wine of Mystic:The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" (1994). This is also a widely acclaimed work.I bought my copy while I was in India. This shows that the Indians (in India)have good taste, appreciation and understanding in fine art, especially the philosophical kind. And this is further confirmed to me in this forum.Thank you for reading my lines. |

Rumi Help! (Currently 0 replies)
Posted At 18:16:44 12/16/2002 Hello. I would like to quote a saying by Rumi in my art portfolio, because I think that the saying I have in mind captures the message I am trying to send through my artwork. I believe it is correctly attributed and phrased. Can someone help confirm this for me?: "Let the beauty you love be what you do. There are hundereds of ways to kneel and kiss the earth." Send me an email! Thank you. |
